DIY Pot Plants with Spray Paint

Painting your own pot plants is one of the easiest weekend DIYs going, and all you need is a can of spray paint and a bit of masking tape. Whether you're refreshing tired old pots or turning a budget terracotta find into something stylish, a few coats of White Knight Squirts can give any planter a custom look for next to nothing. In this step by step guide we'll show you how to spray paint pot plants from prep to final reveal, plus how to mask off stripes and patterns for a designer finish. With over 40 colours to choose from, your next pot plant makeover is only an afternoon away.

What you’ll need
Gather the following materials:
  • Masking tape
  • Cleaning cloth & soap
  • A plant to pot at the end (or gift!)
  • Budget-friendly or second-hand pot plants
  • White Knight Squirts (your choice from 40+ colours!)

How to Paint Pot Plants with Spray Paint

  • Pick a pot with a shape you love. Terracotta, ceramic and plastic all work

  • Wipe it down with a damp cloth and a little soap to remove dust and dirt

  • Let it dry fully so the paint can grip the surface

  • Run strips of masking tape around the pot to create your pattern

  • Try vertical stripes, diagonals or angled bands, whatever suits your style

  • Wherever you place tape, the pot's natural colour stays put, and that's what forms your stripes

  • Press the tape edges down firmly so paint can't bleed underneath

1Mask Out Your Stripes

A person tapes up a terracotta pot on a drop sheet, with a gold spray-painted pot and a plain terracotta pot nearby ready for customising with White Knight Squirts
  • Shake the can well, then spray your White Knight Squirts colour evenly over the taped pot

  • Hold the can around 20 to 30cm away and use light even passes to avoid drips

  • With over 40 colours you can go bright, neutral, metallic or pastel

  • Let it dry for 30 minutes, adding a second coat for extra durability if you like

2Spray Your Colour

Two people apply blue masking tape around a terracotta pot outdoors, marking off sections before spraying with White Knight Squirts
  • Gently peel back the masking tape while the paint is dry to the touch

  • Pull slowly and at an angle for the cleanest stripe edges

  • The masked areas are revealed as crisp stripes in the pot's original colour

  • Let the pot cure fully before potting

3Peel & Reveal

A person holds a finished terracotta pot with an orange and charcoal striped pattern created using White Knight Squirts spray paint
  • Pop in your favourite plant, herbs, succulents or a little fiddle leaf

  • Place it proudly in your home, or gift it to someone who deserves a handmade surprise
