DIY Custom Esky with White Knight Squirts

Crafternoon DIY
Squirts
Summer gatherings are all fun and games… until someone “accidentally” grabs your drink from the esky. Luckily, we’ve got a #CanDo solution: personalise your esky with White Knight Squirts so it’s unmistakably yours. Bold colours, clean lines and a touch of creativity = no more mix-ups.
Two women creatively spray-paint striped patterns on boxes outdoors, one with red and the other with blue, near a gray house.

Personalising your esky is a quick DIY that saves you from the great backyard drink mix-up, and all it takes is a can of spray paint and some masking tape. Whether you're claiming your esky for good or just want it to look the part at the next BBQ, a couple of coats of White Knight Squirts will give it a bold custom finish that stands up to summer. In this step by step guide we'll show you how to spray paint an esky from prep to final reveal, including how to mask off stripes and patterns for crisp clean lines. With over 40 colours to choose from, your one of a kind esky is only an afternoon away.

What you’ll need
Gather the following materials:
  • Masking tape
  • Cleaning cloth
  • An esky (any size works)
  • Paper or plastic for masking
  • White Knight Undercoat (for best adhesion)
  • White Knight Squirts (40+ colours to pick from)

How to Spray Paint an Esky

  • Wipe the esky down with a cloth to remove dirt and dust so the paint sticks

  • Use masking tape and paper to completely cover the top lid

  • This keeps the paint off the part you open and close a hundred times a day

1Clean Your Esky & Mask

  • Apply a coat of White Knight Plastic Primer for maximum adhesion on plastic

  • This helps your esky survive sand, splashes and every backyard BBQ that comes its way

  • Once the primer is touch dry, spray your base colour in smooth even passes

  • Let the base coat dry fully before taping

2Apply Primer & Base Coat

Spraying base coat of White Knight Squirts on esky, one is pastel green, the other pastel pink
  • Use masking tape to mark out stripes, angles, zig-zags or colour blocks

  • Whatever you tape over keeps your base colour, so this is what shapes your design

  • Press the tape edges down firmly so paint can't bleed underneath

3Tape Your Design

  • Grab a bold contrasting White Knight Squirts colour and spray evenly over the taped design

  • Keep your passes light and even to avoid drips

  • Let it dry to touch

4Add Your Secondary Colour

Spraying second coat of White Knight Squirts to customise pattern on DIY esky
  • Carefully peel back the masking tape while the paint is dry to the touch

  • Pull slowly and at an angle to reveal crisp clean lines

  • Remove the lid masking, then let the esky cure fully before loading it with ice and drinks
