How to Paint a Concrete Driveway with White Knight Ultra Pave
Painting your driveway is one of the fastest ways to refresh the exterior of your home, but concrete needs the right preparation to ensure the paint bonds properly and lasts.
White Knight Ultra Pave Heavy Duty Garage Floor Paint is designed for tough concrete surfaces such as driveways, carports and garage floors. For the best result, follow each step carefully and do not skip surface preparation.
What You’ll Need
- White Knight Ultra Pave Heavy Duty Garage Floor Paint
- White Knight Ultra Pave Concrete Etcher
- White Knight Ultra Pave Grip Additive
- Mineral turps
- Broom or blower
- Stiff bristle broom
- Paint brush
- Roller and extension pole
- Paint tray
- Hose or pressure washer
- Protective gloves and eyewear
Step 1: Clean the Driveway
Start by removing all dirt, dust, grease, oil, moss and loose paint from the surface.
Use a broom, blower or pressure washer to clean the area thoroughly. Any oil or grease must be removed before painting, as contamination can stop the paint from bonding properly.
Allow the driveway to dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Etch the Concrete
Etching is essential. It helps open the concrete surface so the paint can properly adhere.
Mix White Knight Ultra Pave Concrete Etcher with water as directed on pack, then pour it evenly over the concrete using a watering can. Scrub the solution across the surface with a stiff bristle broom.
The concrete should visibly bubble as the etcher reacts. Allow it to sit for around 2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Let the surface dry completely before painting.
Step 3: Check the Surface
- Before painting, the driveway should be:
- Clean
- Dry
- Free from grease, oil and dust
- Slightly rough to touch
- Free from loose or flaking paint
- If the surface still feels smooth or sealed, repeat the etching process.
New concrete must cure for at least 12 weeks before painting.
Step 4: Stir the Paint Thoroughly
Stir White Knight Ultra Pave Heavy Duty Garage Floor Paint for at least 5 minutes before use. Re-stir during application to keep the product consistent.
Do not apply if the temperature is below 10°C or above 30°C.
Step 5: Apply the First Coat
Apply the first coat using a brush and roller.
On bare concrete, thin the first coat with 10% mineral turps. This helps the first coat penetrate and bond to the concrete surface.
Work in manageable sections and avoid applying the paint too thickly.
Step 6: Apply the Second Coat
Allow at least 16 hours before recoating.
Apply the second coat unthinned. For improved slip resistance, add White Knight Ultra Pave Grip Additive to the second coat, especially on driveways, sloped areas or surfaces exposed to water.
A painted surface may be more slippery than bare concrete, so grip additive is strongly recommended.
Step 7: Allow the Surface to Cure
Drying and curing are different. The surface may feel dry, but it still needs time to harden before use.
Touch dry: around 1 hour
Recoat: after 16 hours
Light foot traffic: after 4 days
Vehicle traffic: after 7 days
Do not park on the driveway before the coating has fully cured. Early vehicle use, especially from hot tyres, can damage the finish.
How Much Paint Do You Need?
White Knight Ultra Pave Heavy Duty Garage Floor Paint covers up to 14m² per litre per coat, depending on the surface.
Bare, porous or rough concrete will absorb more paint, especially on the first coat. Always allow extra product for driveways that are porous, etched or heavily textured.
Final Tips for a Better Result
Take your time with preparation. Most driveway paint issues come from skipping cleaning, etching or curing time.
For best results:
- Do not paint over damp concrete
- Do not rush the second coat
- Use grip additive for safer traction
- Keep vehicles off the surface for at least 7 days
- Follow all instructions on pack
With the right preparation and the correct Ultra Pave system, your driveway can achieve a durable, refreshed finish built for everyday use.
