How to Paint Metal Surfaces: Gutters, Pipes & Fences

01.01.0001

Metal gutters, downpipes and fences are exposed to the weather every day, which can lead to fading, peeling and rust. The White Knight Rust Guard® system makes it simple to restore and protect metal so it looks great and lasts. Follow these easy steps.

Step 1: Clean the Surface

A clean surface helps your paint stick and prevents peeling.

  • Wipe down with Rust Guard Solvent to remove grease and contaminants
  • If previously painted, scrape or sand off any loose paint and surface rust

Step 2: Treat Rust

If you find rust, stop it before painting.

  • Use Rust Guard Rust Converter to chemically treat rust and create a stable black barrier ready for primer
  • For hard-to-reach areas like joints and crevices, apply Rust Guard Fish Oil, which penetrates rust scale and leaves a protective coating

Step 3: Prime the Metal

Priming gives your topcoat maximum adhesion and corrosion resistance. Choose the right primer for your surface:

  • Rust Guard Metal Primer – for steel, wrought iron and ferrous metals.
  • Rust Guard SLS Etch Primer – designed for aluminium, galvanised iron, brass and copper, and ideal for gutters, pipes and gates. Apply 1 even coat and let it dry as directed.

Step 4: Apply a Topcoat

The topcoat provides colour and long-lasting protection.

  • Rust Guard Advanced Enamel – a quick drying topcoat with outstanding rust protection and a professional finish, backed by an 8-year guarantee
  • Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel – a rust-inhibiting enamel that transforms lightly rusted surfaces in one easy step

For most gutters, pipes and fences, Advanced Enamel is the ideal choice. Apply 2 coats, allowing drying time between each

Step 5: Protect Special Surfaces (Optional)

If you’re working with bare aluminium, brass or copper fittings:

  • Finish with Rust Guard Clear Guard, a protective clear coating that seals the surface and prevents tarnishing

Handy DIY Tips

  • Stir all products thoroughly before use.
  • Lightly sand smooth or glossy surfaces before priming.
  • Apply 2 coats of primer (if required) and 2 coats of topcoat for the best results
  • Always follow the drying times on the pack.

With White Knight Rust Guard®, painting metal is straightforward: Clean → Treat → Prime → Paint. In just a weekend, you can refresh gutters, pipes or fences with a durable finish that’s built to last.
