To obtain best performance and maximum adhesion the surface must
be prepared correctly before application.
General preparation
- Allow new concrete to cure for at least 4 weeks before painting
with White Knight Ultra Pave.
- Unsound concrete should be repaired or replaced.
- Remove all flaking paint and chalky material.
- Ensure the surface is thoroughly clean, dry and free from
grease, oil, dirt, moss and other contaminants. For severely
stained surfaces please contact White Knight customer service on
131 686 (Australia) 0800 131 686 (New Zealand) for advice prior to
painting.
SMOOTH CONCRETE (new or old, unpainted)
- Mechanically remove any curing compound or sealer on the
surface.
- Degrease the surface to remove grease and other stains using a
conventional concrete degreaser.
- Ensure the surface is thoroughly clean, dry and free from
grease, oil, dirt, moss and other contaminants.
- Smooth concrete must be etched before painting to achieve
maximum adhesion. The etching process will slightly roughen the
surface by removing the sheen. Etch surface with White Knight
Concrete Etcher following label instructions.
- After etching it is essential to remove all loose residues
before painting. This can be done by thorough scrubbing with a
stiff bristle broom or by water blasting.
- Scrubbing must be followed by thorough rinsing with a strong
jet of water from a garden hose before the surface dries.
- Check the etching has slightly roughened the surface and
created porosity. It should feel like rough sandpaper - if not,
repeat the etching process.
- Test for loose residues with adhesive tape. If cement or loose
material is picked up on the tape, repeat the cleaning
process.
- If loose residues persist call White Knight customer service on
131 686 (Australia) and 0800 131 686 (New Zealand) for advice.
- The concrete must be allowed to dry completely before painting.
Any water trapped inside the concrete will eventually rise to the
surface and cause the coating to blister and peel. When the surface
appears dry allow additional 24 hours of fine weather for trapped
water to escape holes and crevices.
ROUGH CONCRETE (new, old or previously
painted)
- Mechanically remove any curing compound or sealer on the
surface.
- Remove all loose and flaking paint.
- Sand a glossy surface to improve adhesion.
- Degrease the surface to remove grease and other stains using a
conventional concrete degreaser.
- Clean surface with a strong detergent. Ensure the surface is
thoroughly free from grease, oil, dirt, moss and other
contaminants.
- Use a stiff bristled broom to remove sand, loose materials and
other contaminants and then sweep the surface clean.
- Wash surface thoroughly with water.
- Allow to dry completely. Any water trapped inside the concrete
will eventually rise to the surface and cause the coating to
blister and peel. When the surface appears dry allow additional 24
hours of fine weather for trapped water to escape holes and
crevices.
PAINTED CONCRETE
- Mechanically remove any curing compound or sealer on the
surface.
- Remove all loose and flaking paint.
- Sand a glossy surface to improve adhesion.
- Degrease the surface to remove grease and other stains using a
conventional concrete degreaser.
- Clean surface with a strong detergent. Ensure the surface is
thoroughly free from grease, oil, dirt, moss and other
contaminants.
- Allow surface to dry completely. Any water trapped inside the
concrete will eventually rise to the surface and cause the coating
to blister and peel.
- Before painting, create a test area to ensure compatibility
with the old coating. After 24 hours of drying, check for lifting
of old paint or poor adhesion. If problems are observed total
removal of the old paint is required.
- Stir thoroughly with a broad flat stirrer in a circular lifting
motion for at least 5 minutes before use and continue to stir at
regular intervals during application.
- If additional slip resistance is required add White Knight Pave
and Deck Grip to the paint before application following label
instructions.
- On smooth and unpainted concrete, thin the first coat with 10 -
15% water to aid penetration and adhesion.
- Apply 2 coats by brush, roller or spray gun.
Do not use at temperatures below 10°C or above 35°C.
In hot weather the paint will dry too quickly and cause cracking
and blisters.
In cold weather the paint will dry too slowly and not cure or
harden.
When painting of hot concrete can not be avoided, lightly dampen
surface immediately before application.
Approximately 10m² per litre, depending on the porosity of the
surface.
Touch dry in 30 minutes. Re-coat after 2 hours. Light traffic
after 6 hours. Allow 2 days of fine weather for painted surface to
dry and cure before subjecting to heavy traffic.
Drying will be slower in cold or humid conditions, in the
absence of ventilation or where heavy film builds are
applied.
Clean brushes and equipment with water immediately after
use.
