Surface preparation is vital to achieving the best performance from a concrete paving paint. Concrete Surfaces Unpainted: New concrete must cure before it is painted. This time allows the chemicals and moisture, which prevent adhesion, to rise to the surface of the concrete so they can be removed. Using a water-based paving paint on new concrete will require a curing time of at least 4 weeks before painting. The surface to be painted must be free from dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants. Degrease the surface to remove grease and other stains using a conventional concrete degreaser. Use a stiff bristled broom to remove sand, loose aggregate and other contaminants and then sweep it clean. Wash thoroughly with clean water, then allow to dry.
