Preparation

Preparation

The surface must be thoroughly cleaned, dry and free from grease, oil, dirt, salt and rust scale. Thoroughly sand new metal and lightly sand previously painted surfaces to ensure maximum adhesion. Remove loose rust and flaking paint with a wire brush, scraper or mechanical sander, for best results remove rust back to bare metal. Prime galvanised iron and other non-ferrous metal surfaces with Rust Guard True Bite or SLS Etch Primer. In severe conditions, prime steel with Rust Guard Metal Primer. Do not use when the air or surface temperature is below 10°C or above 30°C. Special Note To improve the coverage of Flame Red or Golden Yellow on dark or uneven surfaces, apply one coat of Rust Guard Flat White for an excellent finish.

Shake can occasionally during use. Do not use when the air or surface temperature is below 15°C or above 30°C or in excessive humidity. Spray outside or in a well ventilated area away from fire and heaters.

HANDY HINT

Identify the type of metal you are treating prior to selecting a Rust Guard product. Use a magnet to find out if your metal is ferrous or non ferrous
If the magnet sticks it’s iron or steel (ferrous), if it doesn’t it is non ferrous. Stainless Steel surfaces should be treated as non-ferrous metal.
Preparation is the key to a successful end result. Surfaces should be wiped clean with Rust Guard Solvent after sanding to remove dust and dirt. Do not use a damp cloth as this may cause moisture to be trapped under the painted surface.
Areas that require protection that are inaccessible should be treated with Fish Oil.
After the surface has identified, cleaned and primed (if required) apply two coats of your desired topcoat.
