Choosing the right paint for the job

Choosing the right paint for the job Inspect the surfaces to determine defects that exist and the tools you will need to fix them.

Determine what types of finishes have been previously used to help you select the correct primer, sealer, undercoat or topcoat required.

Choose your paint based on the type of surface, whether it is interior or exterior (and if exterior, exposure to sun or shade), the wear and tear you expect it to get and finally, what type of finish you are looking for.

Read the labels carefully before buying the paint to determine whether or not it is going to be suitable for the job you have in mind. Selecting the wrong type of paint can reduce the service life of the painted surface and costs both time and money in putting things right. If in doubt, always seek expert advice from your retailer or from the manufacturer. For White Knight products, call 131 686.

Before you Start
Read the instructions on the paint can carefully before you start painting. Make the surfaces easily accessible by clearing the room as completely as possible. Remove pictures, nails, hooks, curtains and rods, tables, chairs, light fittings, door handles etc. Gather up bulky furniture in the centre of the room and cover it with a drop cloth. Mask skirting boards, particularly if stained or varnished to protect against paint spots.

Trade Tip
When painting metal surfaces and you are not sure what type of metal it is, use a magnet to see if it is ferrous or non-ferrous. Magnets don't stick to non-ferrous metals
