Safe To Spray - Inside and Out

The very positive, protective effects of a quick spray of paint have been somewhat tainted by the release of Government figures showing that 24 per cent of all high school students have tried inhaling the fumes of a paint, glue or similar substance in order to achieve a ‘high’.

The act of spraying an aerosol can into a plastic bag and then inhaling the fumes to achieve this almost instant high is commonly called ‘chroming’ and is predominantly the domain of young people. Spray paint is often preferred because of its ease of accessibility and relatively low cost.Australia’s leading speciality paint manufacturer, White Knight Paints, has recently reformulated its entire range of locally-made spray paints to remove harmful solvents that, when inhaled, induce elation and hallucination – without impairing the paint’s performance. The extensive research that led to the non-chroming quality of the White Knight brand of spray paints is one of many initiatives that have led to the brand’s claim of a ‘high quality, socially and environmentally responsible’ paint.  The spray paints are lead and heavy metal free, CFC free (so they won’t harm the ozone layer) and low odour.  A more obscure improvement is the design of the cans’ nozzles – these feature a format that has been specifically designed to deter graffiti vandals.  These nozzles, unlike the nozzles of cheaper, imported spray paints, emit a fine mist of paint instead of a solid hit of paint that the graffiti vandal prefers.  This fine mist produces a high quality, run-free professional finish on almost any surface – highly prized by legitimate users but no good at all when a fast, thick, single coat is required (as is the case with graffiti vandals).White Knight Paints’ range of spray paints – which includes Squirts enamels, Chalkboard, Rust Guard, Hammered Finish, SLS Etch Primer, Fluoro Colour, Spot and Line Marking, Pot Belly, Super Primer and Appliance Finish – are some of the safest and most planet-friendly paints available, according to the company, and are suitable for most household jobs from priming and protecting outdoor metal furniture, downpipes and gutters to painting the furniture in a child’s bedroom or re-colouring the refrigerator. All White Knight spray cans are fully recyclable - there are currently more than 320 councils around Australia accepting the cans, with more coming on board all the time. These new, safe-to-spray (non-chroming) aerosol cans will each carry a distinctive ‘Safe to Spray’ sticker or logo. All locally made White Knight Paints speciality spray cans with their new safe-to-spray formulae are available nationally from paint specialists and hardware outlets.  Prices range from $7.00 for a 310g of Squirts Gloss Enamel. For information on all safe-to-spray products and local stockists please check the company’s web site on www.whiteknightpaints.com.au or telephone 131686.
